Amniotic Membrane Disc Therapy

The treatment of ocular surface disease, including conjunctival and corneal
disease, requires the utilization of the latest technologies. Amniotic Membranes
are one of the latest technologies that provide patients with substantial benefits
in their ocular health by benefiting their vision, reduction of irritation, and
immediately treats severe dry eye disease.

Amniotic Membrane Disc

Why are Amniotic membranes or amniotic disks more effective than eye drops?

There are varying levels of severity with dry eye inflammation and pain. Many dry eye treatments like over-the-counter and prescription eye drops may provide some dry eye relief, but their therapeutic effects still fall short to establish healing of the ocular surface.

Through the use of a small contact lens that contains an amniotic membrane disk, this technology's regenerative properties help to restore the eye to a normal state. There are few other treatments currently that provide such restorative features that can heal a severely damaged cornea and ocular surface and simultaneously treat dry eyes.

Clinical studies continue to show the usage of amniotic membranes heal the eye, soothe eye pain, and improve vision overall.

What eye conditions would benefit from therapeutic use of Amniotic Disks?

Amniotic disks work to heal the ocular surface that is badly damaged caused by a number of Eye conditions:

● Contact lens overwear
● Autoimmune diseases
Dry eye disease
● Corneal erosions
● Chemical or thermal burns
● Epithelial corneal defects
● Eye infection
● Keratitis
● Corneal ulcers
● Neurotrophic keratopathy

Amniotic Disks

How are Amniotic disk therapies administered?

Amniotic disks are advanced medical devices that are inserted onto the eye in-office and they are held in place on the eye with the utilization of a contact lens. The disk is placed directly on the unhealthy cornea and then covered by a soft contact lens and the disk will dissolve into the cornea and immediately begin healing the eye over the next 5-7 days.

The contact lens will then be removed at the next follow-up appointment with the patient.

Through the use of amniotic membrane disk therapy, dry eye disease, corneal erosions, chemical burns, epithelial corneal defects, and even eye infection are treated effectively when other conventional treatments have failed or provided inadequate relief.

Amniotic disks and FDA

The use of amniotic membranes has been FDA approved as a class II medical device. Protective, wound healing, and anti-inflammatory effects from using these disks also received FDA approval.
